Launch of a publication on Mozambique Dialogue Process

During Machel week, the week in which the former president of Mozambique, Samora Moises Machel, died 39 years ago, Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC), an umbrella body of civil society organisations operating in Zimbabwe, is proud to launch a White Paper titled the National Dialogue in Mozambique.

This commemoration marks the 39th anniversary of the death of Mozambique’s founding President, Machel.

In paying tribute to the late icon, the Coalition’s White Paper addresses the severe political crisis and violent protests that erupted in Mozambique following the disputed October 2024 general elections.

While FRELIMO's Daniel Chapo was declared the winner (65.1%), the rejection of the results by Venancio Mondlane (24.1%) exposed deep political instability.

The document argues that past peace processes, like the Maputo Accord, failed due to their elitist, party-centric nature.

To achieve sustainable peace, the paper proposed a transformative two-fold process, which involves

  1. A necessary Political Settlement among the dominant political foes, FRELIMO, Mondlane, and parliamentary parties. This advise was that, the settlement must be conditional on and linked to a broader, subsequent National Dialogue

  1. An All-Inclusive National Dialogue Framework (NDF), which must engage all stakeholders, including civil society, youth, and business. The NDF is mandated to holistically implement deep, legally binding reforms, including Constitutional, Electoral, and Economic changes.

These reforms must redesign the election management process, ensure independent state institutions, and root out corruption.

Ultimately, the goal is to dismantle the "architecture of violence" and achieve democratically contested elections.

The Crisis Coalition and like minded advocacy groups in the region, embarked on intensive advocacy for dialogue and we are excited to announce that the leadership in Mozambique heeded to the calls for dialogue and President Chapo, initiated the process that has brought peace and stability in Mozambique
