Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition implores SADC to act on the Eswatini conflict

29 June 2021

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, an umbrella body of civic society organisations operating in Zimbabwe, calls upon the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to urgently intervene in bringing peace and stability to Eswatini in light of the continued demonstrations against the country’s absolute monarch.

It is our view that the conflict in Eswatini stems from failure to uphold tenets of democracy and this is evidenced by the fact that since 1973, Eswatini has been under an absolute monarch and political parties remain banned.

Our specitic demands include:

a) SADC to urgently send a fact-finding mission whose mandate should include convening an all stakeholders dialogue on the conflict in Eswatini.

b) Push for political reforms that allow for multi-party democracy and guarantee one-person one vote

c) Soliders to immediately return to the Barracks failure of which, after 24 hours, isolate the Eswatini regime.

d) a call on the people of Eswatini to continue fighting until democracy is restored

e) a call on solidarity partners in the region to rally behind the people of Eswatini

f) a call on the Eswatini Mornach to preserve its own dignity by, at all times, allow for the free expression of the sovereign people of the Kingdom of Eswatini.
